On December 24, 2023, Marlon Jones, aged 50, was fatally shot outside his apartment complex near 28th Street and Telegraph Avenue in Oakland, California. The incident occurred just after midnight as Jones returned home with groceries. His wife, Tanya Mixon, joined him in their Lexus when an unknown individual approached from behind as Jones was checking the vehicle identification number for insurance purposes. Jones greeted the man with a casual "What's up?"
The assailant responded aggressively, saying, "What the f— you say, n—? I will kill you," before drawing a gun and shooting Jones. Emergency responders arrived promptly, but Jones, affectionately known as "Mac Lynn," was pronounced dead at the scene.
The motive for the shooting remains unknown. Jones and Mixon had been married since 2017, sharing a relationship that spanned over three decades and endured various challenges, including homelessness and the COVID-19 pandemic. Mixon described her husband as a generous individual who would help anyone, regardless of race, and treated her with unparalleled love and respect. Neighbors echoed her sentiments, recalling Jones as an easy-going and helpful person well-known in the community.
As of now, there have been no arrests made in connection with Jones's death. The Oakland Police Department continues to investigate the case, seeking any information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of the suspect. Mixon has expressed a desire to relocate, fearing for her safety after witnessing her husband's murder. She hopes that the perpetrator will be found, emphasizing the senselessness of the act.
