On March 14, 2016, Brandon Christopher Bell, a 27-year-old man, was shot and killed in West Oakland, California. The incident occurred in the vicinity of Prescott Elementary School, adding a tragic and unsettling dimension to the neighborhood, which was shocked by the violence.
