Omar Montiel-Hernandez, an 18-year-old from Santa Barbara, California, tragically lost his life on January 3, 2021, in a shooting incident that also claimed the life of 17-year-old Angel Castillo. The shooting occurred on Liberty Street near Canada Street in Santa Barbara's Eastside neighborhood. The incident left two other teenagers injured. The Santa Barbara Police Department, along with the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office, launched an extensive investigation into the case, which culminated in
the arrest of three suspects in April 2021.
The suspects, identified as Angel Eduardo Varela, Oscar Martin Trujillo-Gutierrez, and Emilio Perez, were apprehended during coordinated raids in Carpinteria and Summerland. They were charged with multiple counts of murder, committing more than one murder, and committing murder to further a criminal street gang. The suspects were also accused of using a firearm in association with a criminal street gang and attempting murder with premeditation and deliberation. All three suspects were booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail and held without bail.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was gang-related, with the suspects allegedly targeting a group of rival gang members. The case drew significant attention from the community, with residents expressing frustration over the perceived delay in arrests. The families of the victims, particularly the parents of Angel Castillo and Omar Montiel-Hernandez, were vocal about their grief and the impact of the tragedy on their lives. Both Castillo and Montiel-Hernandez were remembered as caring individuals with dreams and aspirations. Castillo had hoped to own an auto body shop, while Montiel-Hernandez was known for his dedication to his family and his positive outlook on life.
In November 2023, a Santa Barbara Superior Court Judge ruled that there was sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to trial. The suspects faced charges of murder and attempted murder, with special circumstances alleging that the crimes were committed for the benefit of a criminal street gang. The trial was set to address the serious allegations and bring justice to the victims and their families. The case highlighted the ongoing issue of gang violence in the area and the efforts of law enforcement to combat such crimes and ensure community safety.
