On February 12, 2021, Garcia was formally charged with involuntary manslaughter and unlawful use of a firearm. He later pleaded no contest to these charges, which carries the same legal consequences as a guilty plea. In April 2021, Garcia was sentenced to eight years in prison for the involuntary manslaughter of Gutierrez.
