In the small community of Jones Chapel, Mississippi, a gathering cloaked in the shadows of an illicit activity turned deadly, leaving two families grieving and a community searching for answers. On the night of November 25, 2023, 25-year-old Dandre “Peanut” Lamond Ducksworth, a Black male, was shot and killed. The incident also claimed the life of his friend, 27-year-old Reshun “Goon” Goudy.
The two men were reportedly at an alleged dogfighting event on Jones Chapel Road when
gunfire erupted. In the aftermath, Ducksworth and Goudy were transported to Covington County Hospital in a private vehicle, but their injuries were too severe. Both were pronounced dead shortly after their arrival, each having sustained a single gunshot wound to the head.
Ducksworth, originally from Pensacola, Florida, had moved to Collins, Mississippi, as a teenager. He was a 2016 graduate of Collins High School, where he had been a part of two state championship football teams. Following in the footsteps of several family members, he had built a career as a truck driver and was employed by Powell Transportation at the time of his death. Those who knew him remembered his love for riding four-wheelers and his sociable nature, often being the life of the party.
Despite the presence of a large crowd, estimated to be between 50 and 200 people, at the event where the shooting occurred, the investigation into the deaths of Ducksworth and Goudy has been met with a wall of silence. The Covington County Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of the FBI and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, has been actively investigating the double homicide. However, a lack of cooperation from potential witnesses has hampered their progress. In an effort to generate leads, animal wellness organizations have offered a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the shooting and for operating the dogfighting event. While family members of the victims have mentioned potential persons of interest, law enforcement officials have not publicly named any suspects, and no arrests have been made in connection with the case. The community is left to grapple with the violent end to two young lives, as the search for justice continues.
