Mervin Lacy Harmon, a 39-year-old Oakland native, was tragically shot and killed on April 16, 2021. Harmon, remembered by his family and friends as a loving father and a talented cook, was one of the victims in a series of killings attributed to the suspected Stockton serial killer, Wesley Brownlee. The fatal shooting occurred around 1:17 a.m. in East Oakland, where police were alerted to shots fired by ShotSpotter technology.
Upon arrival at the scene on the 6200 block of Bromley Avenue, officers found Harmon suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Harmon’s death was initially a mystery, leaving his family in a state of fear and uncertainty for over a year and a half. His case was eventually linked to a string of other murders and one nonfatal shooting allegedly committed by Brownlee. The San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office charged Brownlee with Harmon's murder, along with several other charges related to his alleged killing spree. Brownlee, who was arrested in October 2022, is accused of killing eight people, including Harmon, between 2021 and 2022. His first known victims were Juan Alexander Vasquez and Harmon, both killed in Oakland within a span of six days.
The arrest of Brownlee brought some relief to Harmon's family, who had been living in terror due to the lack of answers and the ongoing threat posed by the serial killer. Despite the arrest, the pain of losing Harmon remains. His family holds on to memories and photos, remembering him for his easygoing nature and his "golden smile." Harmon was homeless at the time of his death, moving between shelters and the homes of family members.
The investigation into Harmon's death and the other killings linked to Brownlee has been extensive. Brownlee is currently facing multiple murder charges and is being held accountable for his alleged crimes. The legal proceedings are ongoing, and the case has drawn significant attention due to the nature and scale of the alleged serial killings.
