Jose Luis Hernandez Laureano, a 30-year-old resident of Bakersfield, California, tragically lost his life on November 17, 2021. The incident occurred on Latham Street in east Bakersfield, where Hernandez Laureano was found lying in the street, bleeding from a gunshot wound. According to court documents, as he lay dying, he pointed to his estranged girlfriend, Cony Alvarado-Romero, and said, "Ella me disparo" (she shot me).
Despite her initial denial, Alvarado-Romero later admitted to firing the shot, claiming it was in self-defense after Hernandez Laureano allegedly assaulted her during an argument.
The bullet entered Hernandez Laureano's back near his left shoulder, traveled through his lungs, and exited through his chest. He was pronounced dead at Kern Medical. Alvarado-Romero, who had no visible injuries, was initially released from custody after the shooting as prosecutors sent the case back for further investigation. However, she was later charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy, and child cruelty in October 2022 and was rearrested.
During the trial, Alvarado-Romero pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter. She was sentenced to 21 years in prison in November 2024. Hernandez Laureano's family expressed their belief that the killing was premeditated and not a crime of passion. They described the act as "cruel and senseless," emphasizing that there was no justification for Hernandez Laureano's death. The family hoped that Alvarado-Romero would be haunted by her actions and that justice would be served.
The case highlights the complexities of domestic violence and the challenges in determining the truth in such situations. Despite Alvarado-Romero's claims of self-defense, the evidence, including security camera footage and witness statements, painted a different picture.
