On March 31, 2022, Robert Montoya, a 34-year-old homeless man, was found fatally shot in Victorville, California. Deputies from the Victorville Sheriff’s Station responded to reports of gunshots in the 16400 block of Forrest Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered Montoya suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate CPR efforts by the deputies and continued life-saving measures by medical personnel, Montoya was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department launched a homicide investigation, with detectives from the Specialized Investigation Division – Homicide Detail taking the lead.
The investigation into Montoya's death progressed over the following months. On July 7, 2022, detectives identified and arrested a suspect, Jose Saul Hernandez, a 38-year-old resident of Victorville. Hernandez was charged with PC 187 – Murder and was booked into the Central Detention Center, where he remains without bail. The arrest marked a significant development in the case, providing some closure to the tragic incident that had shaken the local community.
