Gardiel Solorio, a 26-year-old off-duty Monterey Park police officer, was tragically killed on August 8, 2022, in Downey, California. Solorio was shot multiple times while sitting in his car in the parking lot of an LA Fitness gym. The incident occurred in broad daylight, around 3:30 p.m., in the 12700 block of Lakewood Boulevard, part of a popular shopping area known as Downey Landing. Solorio had just arrived at the gym when he was approached by Carlos Daniel Delcid, who allegedly demanded Solorio’s personal items. As Solorio attempted to reverse his vehicle to escape, Delcid shot him five times at close range. Solorio's vehicle then went backward and collided with a parked van, possibly in an attempt to evade the gunfire.
The investigation into Solorio's death led to the arrest of three individuals. Carlos Daniel Delcid, the primary suspect, was charged with one count each of murder, attempted robbery, and possession of a firearm by a felon. Special circumstances were added to the charges, alleging that the murder was committed during a robbery. Delcid was expected to be arraigned in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Downey Branch. Gerardo Magallanes, an 18-year-old, was also charged with one count of murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle, and unlawful possession of a firearm while on probation. Additionally, a 17-year-old juvenile was arrested for driving the getaway car and faced charges in juvenile court.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office commended the investigative work of the police in tracking down all individuals involved in the crime. District Attorney George Gascón emphasized the commitment to holding those responsible accountable for the senseless killing of Officer Solorio. The case remains under investigation by the Downey Police Department, with ongoing efforts to ensure justice for Solorio and his family. Solorio, who had recently graduated from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Academy and started his field training, was remembered as a dedicated officer and a true American success story. His untimely death has left a profound impact on his family, colleagues, and the community he served.
