Gurpreet Singh, a 44-year-old co-owner of ASL Liquor and Market in Downey, California, was tragically shot and killed on May 7, 2019. The incident occurred around 10:15 p.m. when officers from the Downey Police Department responded to a call of a gunshot victim at the store located in the 8500 block of Paramount Boulevard. Singh was found behind the counter with gunshot wounds, and despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries.
The police initially believed the shooting was the result of an attempted robbery, although other motives were not ruled out.
The investigation quickly gained momentum when surveillance footage from the store was released, leading to several tips from the public. These tips directed the police to a residence in Maywood on May 10, where they observed a man believed to be the shooter getting into a car. This led to a high-speed pursuit involving the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Dylan Andres Lindsey, and a female driver, Alison Hart. During the chase, Lindsey fired multiple rounds at pursuing officers from a large-caliber revolver, striking at least two patrol cars and grazing an innocent bystander. The chase ended in Vernon, where Lindsey was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was taken into custody in critical condition.
Lindsey was charged with the murder of Gurpreet Singh and faced additional charges of assault with a firearm on a peace officer. Unfortunately, Lindsey succumbed to his injuries from the self-inflicted gunshot wound on May 16, 2019. Alison Hart, the driver of the vehicle, was arrested and charged with evading a peace officer and being an accessory after the fact. She was booked after being treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound sustained during the chase.
Gurpreet Singh was remembered as a family man and a patriot, having served as a U.S. Navy Reserve officer. He left behind a wife and two sons. The community mourned his loss, and a funeral was held on May 12, 2019, where he was honored for his service and dedication to his family and community. The investigation into the motive behind Singh's killing continued, with authorities reviewing the deputy-involved shooting and the events leading up to the tragic incident.
