Alex Ruiz, a 20-year-old resident of Santa Ana, California, tragically lost his life on August 15, 2022, in a drive-by shooting. The incident occurred in the midafternoon on the 1700 block of North Spurgeon Street, an area known for gang activity. Ruiz was with his friend, Andres Ponce, when a Chevrolet Equinox drove by, and the passenger, later identified as Edgar Macias Martinez, opened fire.
Ruiz was struck once in the chest and was rushed to OC Global Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:05 p.m. after succumbing to his injuries.
The investigation into Ruiz's death revealed that Martinez, a 25-year-old felon, had borrowed his sister's car to carry out the shooting. Surveillance footage captured Martinez leaning out of the car window and firing at Ruiz. The Santa Ana Police Department (SAPD) was able to track the vehicle using the surveillance video and partial license plate information. Martinez was arrested and charged with first-degree murder with special circumstances of a drive-by shooting and murder for the benefit of a gang. He was also convicted of a sentencing enhancement for the discharge of a firearm causing death.
During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence of Martinez's gang affiliations and his intent to target rival gang members. The defense argued that there was no physical evidence linking Martinez to the shooting, such as gunshot residue or the murder weapon. Despite these arguments, Martinez was found guilty and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, with an additional 29 years to life for the sentencing enhancements.
