Sean Bernal, a 27-year-old security guard, tragically lost his life on August 22, 2022, while on duty at Capitol Casino in Sacramento, California. On that fateful day, Dawan Pecot attempted to rob the casino. Bernal, who was working security, confronted Pecot and escorted him outside at taser point. However, once outside, Pecot pulled out a firearm and re-entered the casino. Inside, he pointed the gun at another employee at the cash cage.
Bernal, in a brave attempt to subdue Pecot, tried to use his taser again. Unfortunately, Pecot shot Bernal in the neck, resulting in his immediate death. Pecot then stole over $38,000 from the casino and attempted to flee the scene.
Following the incident, Pecot was quickly apprehended by the police after a brief chase. He was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree robbery, and several other related offenses. The case proceeded to trial, and on November 27, 2023, Pecot was convicted of first-degree murder with special circumstances, including the use of a firearm causing death and committing murder during a robbery. He was also found guilty of second-degree robbery and other firearm-related charges. On January 12, 2024, Pecot was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
