Jairo Ortiz, a 33-year-old Latino male, tragically lost his life on August 26, 2022, in Los Angeles, California. Ortiz was working as a security guard for a nearby marijuana dispensary when he was fatally shot. The incident occurred late Thursday evening near a movie set in the 1900 block of Bay Street. According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), the shooting was reported around 11:40 p.m. When first responders arrived, they found Ortiz dead in the back of a warehouse at the scene.
It was unclear if that was where the shooting took place. The LAPD launched a homicide investigation immediately following the incident.
Witnesses reported hearing about ten shots, and another individual was shot in the leg during the incident but managed to drive themselves to the hospital. LAPD detectives and investigators interviewed this person at the hospital to gather more information. Ortiz's brother expressed his family's grief and confusion over the senseless killing, stating that Jairo's job was to monitor cameras and prevent break-ins at the dispensary. The family also expressed their desire to bring Ortiz's remains back to Turner, Oregon, where he grew up, and their hope for justice in the case.
