Charles Starzynski, a beloved figure in Sacramento's public radio community, tragically lost his life on October 20, 2022, at the age of 70. Starzynski, who had a long and distinguished career at Capital Public Radio (CapRadio), was known for his contributions as a classical music announcer, reporter, producer, and program director. On the day of his death, Starzynski was at the Sutter Lawn Tennis Club for his regular game of pinochle and lunch with friends.
Around 12:30 p.m., he was shot and killed outside the club during an attempted robbery. When police arrived at the scene, they found Starzynski already deceased from at least one gunshot wound.
The investigation into Starzynski's death quickly led to the arrest of Desean Brasser Jr., a 23-year-old suspect. Brasser was taken into custody within a day of the shooting and charged with murder and first-degree robbery. He was held in the Sacramento County Main Jail without bail pending a court appearance. The Sacramento Police Department later identified a second suspect, Tajaenae Cooper, also 23 years old. Cooper was arrested based on evidence linking him to the homicide. Police believe that Brasser and Cooper followed Starzynski from a bank to the location of the shooting, where they attempted to rob him.
