Jason Roy, a 20-year-old resident of Hemet, California, tragically lost his life in the early hours of October 27, 2022. The incident occurred at his apartment located at 201 S. Columbia St., near Florida Avenue. According to court documents, Roy was involved in a dispute over unpaid drug debts with Roman Ralph Mendez, a 22-year-old narcotics dealer from Castro Valley. On the night of the incident, Roy had consumed marijuana, methamphetamine, and cocaine. Mendez, who had prior felony convictions, arrived at Roy's apartment to collect the debt or possibly take Roy's compact pistol as partial payment. The situation escalated quickly, with Mendez repeatedly demanding money or the gun from Roy and his girlfriend, Kira Carlson.
As tensions rose, Mendez searched Roy for his pistol. During this confrontation, Mendez shot Roy in the head, resulting in his immediate death. Carlson, who was also present, was shot in the back of the head but survived the attack. She was found conscious but bleeding profusely and was later taken to Riverside University Medical Center, where she underwent surgery and spent several months recovering.
Following the incident, the Hemet Police Department launched an investigation, which led to the identification and arrest of Mendez on November 3, 2022. He was charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and additional sentence-enhancing allegations related to the use of a firearm and causing great bodily injury. Mendez was held on a $2 million bail and later convicted by a Murrieta jury in April 2024. He was sentenced to 83 years to life in prison by Riverside County Superior Court Judge F. Paul Dickerson.
The case highlighted the severe consequences of drug-related disputes and the impact of gun violence on the community. The Riverside County Gang Impact Team, supervised by the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office Bureau of Investigation, played a crucial role in surveilling and apprehending Mendez. The investigation and subsequent trial brought some measure of justice for Jason Roy and his family, although the tragic loss of his life remains a poignant reminder of the dangers associated with narcotics and unresolved debts.
