On September 13, 1971, 52-year-old Corrections Sergeant Edward T. Cunningham, a male, tragically lost his life amidst the violent culmination of the Attica Prison riot in Attica, New York. A 22-year veteran of the New York State Department of Correctional Services, Cunningham was one of several correctional officers held hostage by inmates who had seized control of the facility four days earlier in a protest for more humane living conditions.
