On the afternoon of Saturday, June 28, 1986, a young, male New York City Police Officer named Scott Gadell, aged 22, was on patrol with his partner, James Connelly, in the 101st Precinct in Far Rockaway, Queens. The officers were flagged down by two men who reported that a gunman had just fired shots at them. Gadell and his partner began to canvass the area and soon spotted the suspect. A foot pursuit ensued, with the officers chasing the man through a tangle of bungalows and rooming houses.
