In the winter of 1993, a wave of shock and horror washed over a Bronx neighborhood, leaving a lasting scar on the community. On what should have been a day of love, Valentine's Day turned into a scene of brutal violence. Inside an apartment on Prospect Avenue, the lives of six people were tragically cut short in a methodical execution that would come to be known as the 'St. Valentine's Day Massacre.'
Among the victims was a 44-year-old woman named Julia Santana.
The gruesome discovery was made on February 14, 1993. Julia, along with her 17-year-old son, Edwin Santiago, and her 26-year-old daughter, Maria Santana, were found dead, each with a single gunshot wound to the head. The calculated nature of the killings sent a chill through the city, and a dozen detectives were quickly assigned to unravel the mystery behind the heinous act. The neighborhood was no stranger to the sounds of gunfire, but the sheer brutality and precision of these murders were something that stood out. Robbery was swiftly ruled out as a motive, as a significant sum of cash was left untouched in the otherwise undisturbed apartment. The investigation soon turned its focus to the drug trade that had a grip on the area, especially since there had been previous narcotics-related arrests connected to the location.
The narrative that emerged was one of a drug dispute centered around Julia's son, Edwin. This dispute, it was determined, had escalated to a level of violence that ultimately claimed the lives of him, his mother, his sister, and three others in the apartment that fateful day. The investigation led to the arrests of five men who were subsequently tried and convicted for their roles in the massacre. Anthony Casellas, Luis Ramos, Eliot Lopez, Luis Romero, and Edgardo Rosado were all found guilty and sentenced to life in prison for the six murders. The story of violence did not end with their convictions, however. In a brazen act of retaliation, Anthony Casellas' wife, Lourdes, was gunned down on the steps of the Bronx Supreme Court, a stark and tragic postscript to a case that had already inflicted so much pain and loss upon the community. A lawsuit was also filed against the building's management for a broken door and the absence of a security guard on the day of the murders, which resulted in the management company being found partially liable.
