In the early hours of New Year's Day in 2014, a celebration in a South Jamaica, Queens home took a tragic turn, ending the life of 22-year-old Julio Mora. The young man was attending a house party on 113th Avenue, between Sutphin Boulevard and 155th Street, when an altercation erupted. The dispute, reportedly with an older man, escalated, leading to fatal consequences.
Authorities were called to the residence at approximately 1:15 a.m.
and discovered Mora with a gunshot wound to his chest. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene. Initially, it was believed that he had been stabbed, but the city's medical examiner later confirmed that a gunshot was the cause of death. The incident marked the first homicide in New York City that year.
The day after the shooting, the New York Police Department identified 26-year-old Sheldon Smith as a person of interest in connection with Mora's death. Following an investigation, Smith was arrested in February 2014. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. Smith had a prior criminal record, including previous arrests and time served in prison for weapon and drug-related offenses.
Julio Mora, a resident of Richmond Hill, was remembered by his family as a good person. He had graduated from John Bowne High School and was working as a promoter at the time of his death. Tragically, he was killed on the 19th anniversary of his mother's death. He was living with his sister and her family, with whom he shared a close bond since their mother's passing. His family sought answers and justice in the wake of their sudden and devastating loss.
