In the early hours of New Year's Day 2014, a dispute that began over women inside the Seduccion Bar in Hempstead, New York, tragically escalated, leading to the death of 26-year-old Andre Graydon. The altercation, involving Charles Smith and a friend with another group of men, moved from inside the nightclub to the street outside at approximately 3:00 a.m.
Once outside, the disagreement turned deadly when Charles Smith, who was on probation for a federal drug charge at the time, pulled
out a. 40 caliber handgun. As Andre Graydon attempted to flee the scene, Smith fired 11 shots in his direction. Graydon was struck once in the leg. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Following the shooting, Charles Smith fled to Virginia in an attempt to evade law enforcement. His time as a fugitive was short-lived, as federal officials apprehended him on January 30, 2014. Smith was brought back to New York to face charges for the death of Andre Graydon.
On January 25, 2017, Charles Smith pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter. Subsequently, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison for his role in the shooting. The resolution of the case brought a measure of justice for a life cut short by a senseless act of violence that stemmed from a petty disagreement.
