On a bright October afternoon in 2018, a young man’s life was tragically cut short on the streets of Hempstead, New York. Jeffrey Lee, a 23-year-old male from the neighboring community of Roosevelt, was walking with his girlfriend on Dartmouth Street when their path was fatefully crossed. It was shortly after noon on October 12th when Savonn Dangerfield approached Lee near the intersection of Stewart Avenue.
The encounter, reportedly sparked by a 'perceived slight,' escalated with shocking speed as Dangerfield produced a 9mm semi-automatic pistol and shot Lee twice in the middle of the day. The brazen act of violence occurred mere steps from a Head Start preschool program. Emergency services rushed Lee to NYU Langone Hospital Long Island, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The sudden loss plunged Jeffrey Lee’s family into a deep grief. His mother, Yvonne Fletcher, mourned the death of her only child and expressed her profound sorrow for Lee's four-year-old daughter, who was left without a father. As his family grappled with their heartbreak, the Nassau County Police Department launched a homicide investigation, appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the apprehension of the person responsible for the cold-blooded shooting. The investigation soon zeroed in on a primary suspect who had vanished in the wake of the killing.
The search for justice led authorities on a months-long manhunt that crossed state lines. Investigators identified Savonn Dangerfield, a 22-year-old from Hempstead, as the man who had gunned down Jeffrey Lee. In an attempt to evade capture, Dangerfield had fled to Ohio. However, law enforcement eventually tracked him down, and on May 6, 2019, he was arrested in Steubenville, Ohio. Dangerfield was extradited back to Nassau County, where he was formally charged with second-degree murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree. In March 2024, Dangerfield pleaded guilty to the charges against him. Two months later, he was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison, bringing a close to the long and painful chapter for the family of Jeffrey Lee.
