On a summer evening in Hempstead, New York, the life of 30-year-old Gerraud Hill of Malverne was cut short by an act of violence. On Friday, July 3, 2015, at approximately 10:54 p.m., Hill was shot at least once in front of a residence on Chase Street. Despite his injuries, Hill managed to get into his Chevrolet Traverse and drive away from the scene.
His attempt to flee ended tragically about half a mile away on Rose Avenue. There, his vehicle struck a parked car before crashing into a house, causing structural damage to the residence. Fortunately, no one inside the home was injured. Hill was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:28 p.m.
The shooting of Gerraud Hill was part of a grim wave of violence that swept through the village of Hempstead that week, with two other homicides occurring around the same time. In the wake of these events, Nassau County police announced an increased reward of $10,000 for information leading to an arrest in each of the three cases.
