In the early morning hours of February 16, 2015, the life of 17-year-old Barry Lovelace was tragically cut short in a West Brighton apartment on Henderson Avenue in Staten Island. The teenager was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds to his chest and was pronounced dead at the scene. The male victim had been sitting on a couch inside the apartment when the incident occurred.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to an acquaintance, Mark Ortiz.
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Lovelace himself identified Ortiz as the shooter in his final moments. Another witness also placed Ortiz at the scene just before the fatal shots were fired. Following the shooting, Ortiz fled the apartment, sparking a manhunt that led to him being placed on the Staten Island's 'most wanted' list. The search for Ortiz extended beyond New York, with authorities believing he might have been hiding in the Bronx or Pennsylvania. He was eventually apprehended in March 2015.
Mark Ortiz, who was 20 years old at the time of his conviction, stood trial for the murder of his friend. In November 2016, a jury found him guilty of murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. The motive for the shooting was described by the District Attorney as a 'senseless and heartless act of violence.' In January 2017, Ortiz was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for the murder of Barry Lovelace. The sentence was a combination of 22 years to life for the murder charge and additional time for the weapons charges, with the judge ordering the sentences to run consecutively.
