Jarvis Lee Shields Jr., a 21-year-old male, tragically lost his life on June 13, 2015, in Syracuse, New York. Known to his loved ones as 'King Ja Ja,' he was a former varsity football player at both Cypress Ranch High School in Houston and Corcoran High School in Syracuse. His life was cut short by an act of gun violence.
The incident that led to Shields' death unfolded at a house party on Rowland Street. An argument that began inside the party escalated and moved outdoors.
In the ensuing confrontation, Shields was shot. He was rushed to the hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The Syracuse Police Department investigated the homicide and identified Tyquan Nelson, then 18 years old, as the suspect in the shooting. A warrant for Nelson's arrest was issued in July 2015, charging him with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. After a search, Nelson was located and taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force in October 2015.
In May 2016, Tyquan Nelson appeared in court and pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter. As a result of his guilty plea, he was sentenced to 23 years in state prison. Following his release, he will be subject to five years of post-release supervision.
