In the early hours of a Wednesday morning in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn, a scene of violence shattered the quiet streets. Adetunji Ajakaye, a 25-year-old male, was fatally shot in what police described as a drive-by shooting on July 15, 2015. He was sitting in the driver's seat of his black BMW at the intersection of East 17th Street and Newkirk Avenue around 12:49 a.m. when the attack occurred.
A white sedan reportedly pulled up alongside his vehicle, and an occupant opened fire, striking Ajakaye multiple times in the chest, thigh, arm, and back.
Ajakaye was discovered unconscious and unresponsive in the front seat of his car. Emergency services were called to the scene, and he was rushed to Kings County Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. A 21-year-old woman who was in the car with Ajakaye at the time of the shooting was not injured in the incident. Witnesses in the vicinity reported hearing the succession of gunshots and seeing the aftermath, including the shattered driver's side window of the BMW.
In the weeks following the shooting, the New York Police Department investigated the homicide. Their efforts led to the arrest of 18-year-old Oshane Fyffe. Fyffe, who lived in the area, was apprehended on August 5, 2015, during a large-scale narcotics raid conducted by the 70th Precinct in the neighborhood. Following his arrest, Fyffe was charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the death of Adetunji Ajakaye.
