In the early morning hours of October 4, 2015, a dispute that began in a Staten Island after-hours club spilled out into the streets, culminating in the tragic deaths of two brothers. Terrell Ford, a 27-year-old male, and his older brother, Justin Ford, who was 28, were fatally shot outside a gas station at the intersection of Targee Street and Vanderbilt Avenue in the Clifton neighborhood.
Terrell had reportedly followed the altercation from the club in an attempt to act as a peacemaker and de-escalate the growing tensions.
As the conflict intensified, Justin, who had just finished a shift at a local car service, rushed to his brother's side to help. It was then that a gunman, later identified as Wayne Thomas, opened fire. Terrell was struck in the torso, and Justin was hit in the back. Both brothers were transported to local hospitals where they were pronounced dead. The incident, which occurred just blocks from their home, sent shockwaves through the community.
Four days after the shooting, police arrested Wayne Thomas, who was 30 years old at the time and on parole for a prior manslaughter conviction. He was charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. Thomas's first trial ended in a mistrial in November 2016 after the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict.
However, a retrial in July 2017 resulted in a conviction. A jury found Wayne Thomas guilty of the murders of both Terrell and Justin Ford. Following the conviction, Thomas was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a measure of closure to the family of the two slain brothers.
