In the early morning hours of April 28, 2016, the life of 25-year-old Carlos Alberto Vargas was tragically cut short in his Bronx apartment. A father of two young girls, he was fatally shot in the face during a botched robbery. The incident unfolded around 4:15 a.m. inside a second-floor apartment at 2466 Marion Avenue in the Fordham neighborhood. Neighbors reported hearing the chilling sounds of three gunshots followed by screaming, prompting a 911 call for an assault in progress.
When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Vargas with a gunshot wound and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation revealed that two men in their 20s were being sought in connection with the homicide. The events that transpired that morning were part of an attempted robbery. Two individuals, one of whom was later identified as Dwaine Collymore, also known as 'Twin,' entered the apartment where Vargas and others were present. A struggle ensued when the victims resisted the robbery attempt.
During the altercation, Collymore used a stun gun on Vargas, causing him to fall to the ground. He then fired a shot at another individual in the room, who was not hit and pretended to be dead. Believing the second person was no longer a threat, Collymore turned his attention back to Vargas. He then fired a single, fatal shot at close range into Vargas's head. In February 2018, Dwaine Collymore pleaded guilty to the murder of Carlos Vargas. He faced a maximum sentence of life in prison for his role in the deadly attempted robbery.
