In the summer of 2016, a life was abruptly cut short in Syracuse, New York, leaving a family and community to grapple with a senseless act of violence. Nathan Chandler, a 34-year-old Black man, died on July 2, 2016, following a shooting. He was a father to five children.
The fatal encounter began with a dispute inside a nightclub on the North Side of the city. The disagreement spilled out onto North Salina Street, where it escalated with tragic consequences.
Chandler was shot and was later pronounced dead at Upstate University Hospital. The incident was particularly heartbreaking for his loved ones as the altercation appeared to be a random act of violence, with no prior connection between the victim and the assailant.
The Syracuse Police Department swiftly launched an investigation into the homicide. Their efforts led to the identification and arrest of a suspect, Jaquey Bridges. He was taken into custody and subsequently charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with Nathan Chandler's death.
During the ensuing trial, the prosecution presented evidence and witness testimony to build its case against Bridges. The court proceedings detailed the events of that fateful night, arguing that Bridges acted with a reckless disregard for human life.
