In the warm evening of August 6, 2016, Manuel Ayala-Oceguera, a 79-year-old Hispanic man, was sitting outside a local deli in New Rochelle, New York. It was a routine he enjoyed, spending time in the community he visited for several months each year to be with his grandchildren and other relatives. Tragically, this peaceful evening was shattered at approximately 11:09 p.m. by the sound of a gunshot.
A stray bullet, described by the New Rochelle Police Commissioner as a 'wild shot' fired from about 75 feet away, struck Mr. Ayala-Oceguera in the chest.
Surveillance footage captured the horrifying moments as he stood up, staggered, and then collapsed, clutching his chest and back. He was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, but his life could not be saved, and he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. The police investigation quickly determined that Mr. Ayala-Oceguera was an innocent bystander and not the intended target of the shooting. The incident deeply affected the New Rochelle community, leading to an outpouring of support for his grieving family.
In the wake of the senseless tragedy, local organizations and businesses raised funds to help the family with expenses. A funeral Mass was held at St. Joseph's Church in New Rochelle, allowing the community to pay their respects before his body was flown to Mexico for burial. Despite the active investigation by the New Rochelle Police Department and a reward being offered for information that could lead to an arrest, the case remains unsolved. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the death of Manuel Ayala-Oceguera, and authorities continue to appeal to the public for any information that might bring a resolution to this tragic case.
