On a summer evening in New Rochelle, the life of a young man from the Bronx was cut short by gunfire. Devante Lane, a 23-year-old male, was fatally shot on July 15, 2020, at the corner of Horton Avenue and Brook Street. The incident, which also left another individual wounded, unfolded around 9:30 p.m. and was described by sources familiar with the investigation as a 'targeted killing.'
According to reports, a man exited a vehicle near a grocery store at the intersection, walked west on Horton Avenue, and deliberately shot two people, striking Lane in the head. Emergency services arrived to find Lane with a grievous wound, and he was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The second victim sustained a leg injury that was not considered life-threatening. Witnesses at the scene reported hearing a total of six gunshots.
In the days that followed, the investigation into Lane's death was active, though police did not immediately name a suspect. Five days after the fatal shooting, on July 20, another shooting incident occurred at the same location. This time, it was a drive-by shooting where four shots were fired from a moving vehicle at several people. Fortunately, no one was injured in this subsequent event.
The investigation into the July 20th drive-by led to the arrest of 24-year-old Stephen Hugh of Yonkers, who was charged with attempted murder. At the time of Hugh's arrest, the New Rochelle Police Department stated that they were investigating whether the two incidents were related.
