In the early morning hours of November 7, 2017, the life of 17-year-old Alyssa Rodriguez was tragically cut short in her fourth-floor apartment in Coney Island, Brooklyn. A burst of gunfire inside the residence on West 35th Street left the young woman with a fatal gunshot wound to her chest. Another individual, a 20-year-old man, was also struck by a bullet in the arm but survived the attack.
Emergency services rushed Alyssa to Coney Island Hospital, but her injuries proved too severe, and she was pronounced deceased.
The investigation quickly focused on Alyssa's ex-boyfriend, 25-year-old Jeanpierre Pacheco. In the days following the shooting, the New York Police Department identified him as a person of interest. The search for Pacheco concluded on November 14, 2017, when he voluntarily surrendered to the authorities at the 60th Precinct stationhouse. His decision to turn himself in brought a significant development to a case that had left a community in mourning.
Following his surrender, Jeanpierre Pacheco was arrested and faced a series of serious charges. The Brooklyn District Attorney's office charged him with second-degree murder for the death of Alyssa Rodriguez, as well as attempted murder and assault in connection with the injury to the second victim. Additional charges included criminal possession of a weapon, reflecting the violent nature of the crime that ended a young life and forever altered another.
