In the early morning hours of February 27, 2018, the life of 34-year-old Jessica Wiltse was tragically cut short in her Tarrytown, New York, apartment. A mother of two young boys, Wiltse was discovered bleeding and semi-conscious in her Sleepy Hollow Gardens apartment complex at approximately 7:16 a.m. She had been shot twice, in the chest and arm, with a. 45-caliber semi-automatic pistol.
Despite being rushed to Westchester Medical Center, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into her death quickly led police to a suspect, Cynell Brown, then 28 years old, of New York City. A trail of evidence pointed to Brown's involvement. Investigators recovered the murder weapon from a garbage can at a bus stop near Wiltse's home. In close proximity to the weapon, they found a suitcase containing papers with Brown's name and phone number. Further evidence included a bag of cocaine that Brown had discarded from the window of a taxi as he fled the scene, and surveillance footage of him purchasing groceries the night before the murder that were later found in Wiltse's apartment. The extensive manhunt for Brown prompted several local school districts to implement a lock-out as a safety precaution. He was apprehended later that same day at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan.
In November 2022, following a four-week trial, a jury found Cynell Brown, then 32, guilty of second-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a controlled substance, and two counts of tampering with physical evidence. Throughout the legal proceedings, a clear motive for the murder was never established. During his sentencing in January 2023, Brown was reportedly disruptive and uncooperative, showing no remorse for his actions. He was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. Jessica Wiltse's family was present in court and had requested the maximum sentence for the man responsible for the death of the beloved mother, whose two sons are now being raised by their grandparents.
