On the evening of March 22, 2018, a fatal encounter unfolded inside the 5 de Mayo shop, a grocery store located at 81-06 Roosevelt Ave. in the Jackson Heights neighborhood of Queens. Saferino Flores Pineda, a 31-year-old Hispanic man, was shot and killed in what authorities described as an ambush. The incident, which occurred at approximately 8:15 p.m., was suspected by law enforcement to be connected to gang activity.
