In the winter of 2014, a tragic home invasion in Jamaica, Queens, claimed the life of 21-year-old Taquane Clark. On December 5th, the young man was fatally shot when three men broke into his home. The violent encounter also left his uncle, Jonathan Legister, wounded. Another woman present in the home, Olive Legister, Jonathan's mother, was held hostage during the harrowing event.
Following the incident, an investigation led to the identification of two suspects.
One of the assailants was shot during the robbery, and the DNA evidence left at the scene was traced to 28-year-old Elijah Gough. This crucial piece of evidence would later lead to his conviction. Another individual, Prakash Churaman, who was a friend of Taquane Clark, was also implicated. Churaman, a Guyanese immigrant who was 15 at the time, was identified by Olive Legister, who recognized his voice.
The legal proceedings for the two suspects took different paths. In 2018, Elijah Gough was found guilty for his role in the home invasion and the murder of Taquane Clark. He received a lengthy sentence of 65 years to life in prison. Prakash Churaman's case, however, proved to be more convoluted. With no physical evidence linking him to the crime scene, the prosecution's case relied heavily on a confession he made. He was convicted of felony murder in December 2018.
However, Churaman’s conviction was later overturned, leading to a complex legal battle. Years after the initial conviction, a Queens Supreme Court judge called for an unscheduled conference in his case, just weeks before he was set to be tried for a second time for the 2014 murder.
