On a cold February evening in 2019, tragedy struck in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. Twenty-year-old Giovanni Lewis, a Black male, was with three friends, leaving a party in an apartment building on Fulton Street. As the group waited in the lobby for a taxi to arrive, their night was shattered by the sound of gunfire. A lone gunman, positioned outside the building, opened fire on the unsuspecting group, unleashing a volley of bullets that would forever alter the course of many
lives.
The sudden attack left a scene of chaos and devastation. Giovanni Lewis was struck in the head and chest and tragically succumbed to his injuries right there in the lobby. The three individuals with him were also hit. A 55-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man both suffered serious torso wounds, while a 22-year-old woman sustained a graze wound. In the terrifying moments that followed the shooting, the injured survivors managed to retreat upstairs and find cover in a hallway as emergency services rushed to the scene. They were all transported to local hospitals and thankfully survived their injuries.
The New York Police Department immediately launched an intensive investigation into the quadruple shooting. Detectives canvassed the area, speaking with witnesses and scouring for any available evidence. Their efforts led them to surveillance footage that captured the harrowing moments of the suspect's escape. The video showed a man with a dark complexion, clad in a black hooded sweater and dark-colored pants, fleeing the scene. He was seen getting into a black SUV, which was driven by a second, unidentified individual, before speeding away.
Despite the available footage and a detailed description of the shooter, the case has remained unsolved. In the years that have passed since that fatal night, the NYPD has continued to seek information from the public, even re-releasing the video of the suspect in the hopes of generating new leads. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Giovanni Lewis, and the case is considered a cold case. The search for the person or persons responsible for this senseless act of violence continues, leaving a family and a community still waiting for justice.
