On a late summer evening in 2019, the life of 20-year-old Emerson Jean-Baptiste was tragically cut short. On September 1st, in the vicinity of the 150 Liberty Parkway apartment complex in Spring Valley, New York, reports of gunshots prompted a police response. Officers arrived to find Jean-Baptiste on the ground, unresponsive, with a gunshot wound.
He was rushed to Nyack Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the death of the male victim led authorities to two suspects. The day after the shooting, Jayden Rodriguez, who was 17 at the time, and 20-year-old Paul Miller were apprehended in New Jersey by a joint effort of the Spring Valley and North Bergen police departments. Both individuals were initially charged with murder. Following their arrest, they were held in New Jersey, awaiting extradition to New York to face the charges.
Subsequent legal proceedings revealed more details about the incident. Jayden Rodriguez of North Bergen, New Jersey, admitted to entering an apartment building in Spring Valley and shooting Emerson Jean-Baptiste. Several days after the incident, the firearm used by Rodriguez was recovered in an unrelated matter by the Haverstraw Town Police Department. In May 2022, Rodriguez pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter.
In August 2022, at the age of 19, Jayden Rodriguez was sentenced for his role in Jean-Baptiste's death. A judge sentenced him as an adult to 19 years in state prison, to be followed by five years of post-release supervision. While Paul Miller of Haverstraw was also arrested and charged with murder in connection with the incident, information regarding the outcome of his case is not publicly available.
