In the early morning hours of July 8, 2022, a sense of loss befell a Spring Valley, New York community when 17-year-old Treynahel Cineus was tragically killed. The young male was discovered in a grassy area near the Meadow Lane Apartment complex on West Eckerson Road around 2:30 a.m. suffering from a gunshot wound. Responding officers immediately began life-saving efforts, which were continued by emergency medical personnel.
Cineus was rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. A high school student with a promising future, he was about to enter his senior year at Ramapo High School. His family described him as a polite and affectionate young man, and his death left them devastated and searching for answers.
The investigation into the shooting led by the Spring Valley Police Department, with assistance from multiple other law enforcement agencies, soon identified suspects. On July 21, 2022, detectives arrested 23-year-old Anthony Mitchell of Haverstraw in connection with the fatal shooting. Shortly thereafter, two other Haverstraw men, 21-year-old Ahmad Williams and 20-year-old Brian Thomas, were also taken into custody. The motive for the shooting has not been publicly disclosed by investigators.
Following the arrests, the case moved to the legal system. A Rockland County Grand Jury indicted all three men on multiple felony charges, including second-degree murder, attempted murder, and criminal possession of a weapon. Anthony Mitchell was arraigned and initially held without bail. After the indictments were handed down, all three men were remanded to the Rockland County Jail. The arrests brought a measure of relief to the grieving family and community, initiating the long process of seeking justice for the untimely death of Treynahel Cineus.
