In the early morning hours of December 27, 2019, the life of 18-year-old Bernard Copeland Jr. was tragically cut short on a street in Rochester, New York. Police responded to a call on Lyell Avenue, near North Plymouth Avenue, to find the young man on the ground with a gunshot wound. Copeland was pronounced dead at the scene, marking a grim start to a day that would see another homicide in the city.
The investigation into the death of the male teenager moved swiftly.
Authorities identified and arrested a 16-year-old, Bipan Bhujel, in connection with the fatal shooting. Bhujel was subsequently charged with second-degree murder. Due to his age, the case was handled in the Youth Part of County Court, and he was remanded to the Monroe County Children's Secure Detention Facility following his arraignment. The arrest brought a small measure of hope for justice to a community shaken by the violence that had claimed a young life.
