In the early hours of a summer morning in Manhattan, the life of 23-year-old Stephon Johnson was tragically cut short. On July 5, 2020, Johnson was in the vicinity of 370 West 116th Street when he was struck by a bullet in his back. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, but the event marked another instance of gun violence in the city.
Following the shooting, Johnson was privately transported to Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries at 3:05 a.m. The New York Police Department was notified of the shooting when they received a 911 call from the hospital at 2:42 a.m. regarding a man with a gunshot wound.
In the days that followed, the NYPD launched an investigation into Johnson's death. On July 16, 2020, authorities released images of an individual they identified as a suspect, captured by nearby surveillance cameras. The police appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of the person responsible for Stephon Johnson's death.
