An 18-year-old Black male, Omari Ellis, was fatally shot in Mount Vernon, New York, on July 29, 2020. In the early morning hours, while sitting in a friend's car on South Eighth Avenue, Ellis was struck by gunfire. The incident was brought to the attention of the police during a traffic stop on South Tenth Avenue when the driver, Ellis's cousin, informed them of the shooting.
