On a cold January night in Albany, New York, the life of 32-year-old Shanita Thomas was tragically cut short. On January 30, 2021, the mother of two, with a third child on the way, was at a gathering on Central Avenue when gunfire erupted. Thomas, an aspiring nurse known for her bright smile and joyful spirit, was struck and killed. The shooting, which took place at a party, also left four other people wounded.
The violence of that evening sent ripples through the community, leaving friends and family to mourn a woman remembered for her kindness and support of others. Thomas was an active member of her community and was involved with an organization aimed at reducing gun violence. Her death, particularly poignant as she was six months pregnant, highlighted the devastating impact of such acts. In the days following the shooting, a memorial of balloons, flowers, and candles grew outside the building where she lost her life.
The investigation into the shooting led to the indictment of four men: Terrence Anthony, 42, of Albany; Vramir Branch, 33, of Troy; Marcel Perry, 35, of Troy; and Raa'jiem Coleman, 32, of Albany. They face charges including second-degree murder and attempted murder. The indictment alleges that the four men were responsible for the shooting that killed Thomas. All four men have pleaded not guilty. The legal proceedings have been complex, with a murder trial being adjourned after it was discovered that confidential documents identifying witnesses were found in the jail cells of three of the defendants, leading to a death threat against a witness. This prompted a separate investigation by the State Police into the leak of the protected records.
The suspects in Thomas's murder have extensive criminal histories. Vramir Branch, identified as a known gang member, had previously served state prison time for attempted murder and weapons charges. Terrence Anthony and Marcel Perry had also served time in federal prison after being convicted in a racketeering case connected to a South End gang. The case against the four men continues, as a community still waits for justice for Shanita Thomas and her unborn child.
