In the early hours of September 19, 2021, a chaotic scene unfolded on Driving Park Avenue in Rochester, New York, where gunfire erupted at an unsanctioned party, forever altering the lives of many. Twenty-three-year-old Sharif Clark was among those who lost their lives in the violent outburst that also claimed the life of 35-year-old Jimmie Jones and left two others wounded. The party, held in a building under construction, was attended by a large crowd of 75 to 100 people. The night of celebration turned into one of tragedy when at least one individual fired more than 20 shots into a crowd gathered in an alleyway next to the building.
Sharif Clark was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. The shooting left another man in his 30s with life-altering injuries and a woman in her 20s with multiple gunshot wounds, though she survived. The Rochester Police Department responded to a chaotic scene as people fled the area in the wake of the violence. The incident marked a grim anniversary, occurring on the same day as another mass shooting in the city a year prior.
The investigation into the double homicide led to the arrest of 27-year-old John Gordon. Gordon, who was on parole at the time of the shooting, was charged with two counts of second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. His criminal history revealed a prior conviction for attempted first-degree manslaughter in connection with a fatal shooting in 2015, for which he had been released from prison in May 2021.
