In the winter of 2016, a young man’s life was tragically cut short in New Orleans. Eighteen-year-old Tyre Smith, a Black male, was last seen on the evening of Saturday, December 3, 2016, in the 4000 block of Duplessis Street. Concern grew when he failed to attend school the following Monday, and all calls to his cellphone went directly to voicemail.
The New Orleans Police Department issued a missing person alert, describing him as 5'7' tall and weighing about 142 pounds.
The search for the missing teenager came to a grim conclusion in the early morning hours of Sunday, December 4, though he would not be identified for several more days. His body was discovered in the 1700 block of St. Ann Street in the historic Treme neighborhood. An autopsy later confirmed that the young man had been shot multiple times. On Wednesday, December 7, the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office officially identified the victim as Tyre Smith.
In the wake of the discovery, police appealed to the public for any information regarding Smith's whereabouts on the Saturday night and Sunday morning of his disappearance and death. However, publicly available information since the initial investigation has not indicated that any arrests have been made or suspects identified in connection with the homicide.
