In the early morning hours of October 14, 2021, a burst of violence shattered the predawn quiet of an East Harlem neighborhood. Wesley G. Martin, a 33-year-old Black man, found himself in the final moments of his life on a sidewalk near the corner of East 121st Street and Third Avenue. It was around 2:30 a.m. when the sound of a gunshot echoed through the streets.
When first responders arrived, they discovered Martin in front of the Harlem East Life Plan clinic, suffering from a single, devastating gunshot wound to his chest.
Despite the urgent efforts of emergency medical personnel who rushed him to Harlem Hospital, the injury proved to be too severe. Wesley Martin succumbed to his wound and was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at the hospital. The sudden and tragic end to a young life left a community in shock and a family grappling with an unbearable loss. The New York Police Department immediately launched an intensive investigation into the homicide, determined to bring the person responsible to justice.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on a person of interest, and in a testament to the efficiency of the detectives on the case, an arrest was made in less than a day. The suspect was identified as Michael Benton, a 44-year-old resident of East Harlem. In a startling revelation, it was discovered that Benton was not a stranger to his victim; in fact, the two men were neighbors, living just a block away from each other and were previously acquainted. The motive behind the fatal encounter, however, remained less clear.
Following his apprehension, Michael Benton was charged with murder and two counts of criminal possession of a loaded firearm.
