While the male victim would ultimately survive the shooting, Erica's wounds were far more severe, leaving her in critical condition.
For two weeks, Erica fought for her life, but the damage was too great. On February 8, 2022, she succumbed to her injuries, turning a violent assault into a homicide investigation. The Buffalo Police Department immediately began the arduous task of piecing together the events of that tragic night, appealing to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest. The investigation led authorities to a suspect, Victor M. Cramer-Williams, also known as 'Bookie.' In a dramatic turn of events on April 14, 2022, a team composed of the Buffalo Police Department, the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force, and the FBI Safe Streets Task Force located Cramer-Williams at a residence on West Utica Street. In a desperate attempt to flee, he leaped from a window onto a garage roof, leading officers on a foot chase during which he discarded a bag. After refusing commands to stop and struggling with officers, he was ultimately subdued with a taser and taken into custody. The bag he had thrown was recovered and found to contain an illegal pistol.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, the full story of that January night began to emerge. Prosecutors detailed how Cramer-Williams intentionally fired multiple shots from an illegal handgun, injuring the male victim and fatally wounding Erica Ralston, who was an innocent bystander in the apartment. Faced with the evidence against him, on June 12, 2023, 28-year-old Victor M. Cramer-Williams pleaded guilty to one count of Manslaughter in the First Degree. This plea brought a measure of resolution to a case that had left a family and a community grieving, culminating in a prison sentence for the man responsible for Erica Marie Ralston's untimely death.
