In the early hours of March 14, 2022, Janet Jordan, a 35-year-old female 911 dispatcher, returned to her Rochester, New York, home on Wetmore Park after finishing her shift. Shortly after 2 a.m., security footage captured a figure, later identified as off-duty Rochester Police Sergeant Melvin Williams, entering her residence. An hour later, the same camera recorded Williams leaving the house.
This would be the last time anyone entered or left the home until later that morning.
Janet's husband arrived home from his own work shift around 7:15 a.m. to a horrific discovery. He found his wife deceased inside their home and immediately called 911. The medical examiner would later determine that Janet Jordan had died from gunshot wounds to the head, and her death was ruled a homicide. Forensic evidence powerfully connected Williams to the crime scene. His DNA was found on cartridge casings discovered inside Jordan's home, and conversely, Janet's DNA was found on the jacket Williams was wearing when his body was discovered. Investigators also found a key to Janet Jordan's house in Williams' possession. While the motive behind the tragic murder-suicide remains unclear, the evidence pointed to a premeditated act by Williams. Due to the death of the sole suspect, no charges were filed, and the case was subsequently closed.
