On the evening of May 8, 2022, a tragic and violent series of events unfolded in a busy parking lot in Middletown, New York, culminating in the death of 20-year-old Edward Wilkins. The young man, a White male, was fatally shot in what investigators later determined to be a murder-suicide stemming from a love triangle. The perpetrator was identified as Sean Armstead, a 36-year-old off-duty New York City Police Department officer.
The confrontation began on Route 211 when Armstead, driving
his personal vehicle, intentionally crashed into the car driven by Wilkins. Following the collision, Wilkins exited his vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Armstead pursued him into the parking lot of a nearby Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant. There, Armstead, armed with his Glock 9mm service weapon, fired multiple shots at Wilkins, striking him several times in the head and torso. After killing Wilkins, Armstead turned the gun on himself, taking his own life at the scene. Both men were pronounced dead when authorities arrived.
Subsequent investigation by the New York State Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation revealed the motive behind the deadly encounter. Armstead was married, and his wife was also in a relationship with Wilkins. It is believed that Armstead had been following Wilkins after discovering his wife had been with him at a nearby hotel earlier that day. The investigation, which included a review of security footage, crime scene analysis, and witness interviews, concluded that Armstead was solely responsible for Wilkins' death.
Since the perpetrator, Sean Armstead, died by suicide at the scene, no arrests were made in connection with the death of Edward Wilkins. The Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation released a public report concluding that there was no basis for criminal charges against any living person. The case was subsequently closed, leaving a community to grapple with the shocking violence and the loss of a young life.
