On a summer evening in the Bronx, what began as a joyous family outing to a Father's Day basketball tournament ended in tragedy for 25-year-old Jelani Green. On June 19, 2022, Green was at the Half Nelson Playground in the Morris Heights neighborhood to watch her brother play. As the game concluded, a single gunshot echoed through the park. Green was struck in the neck by a stray bullet, an unintended victim of what police believe was a dispute between rival gangs.
The gunshot wound was
devastating, severing her spinal cord and leaving her paralyzed from the neck down. She was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she would spend the next two months fighting for her life. Despite her resilience, her condition deteriorated. She suffered a stroke in August, which was followed by a series of infections and collapsed lungs. On September 6, 2022, Jelani Green succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into her death remains ongoing. The New York Police Department has launched a murder inquiry and has appealed to the public for assistance. They have released surveillance photos of an individual they are seeking to question in connection with the shooting. However, as of late 2022, no arrests have been made in the case that cut short the life of a young woman who was simply enjoying a day with her family.
