On the morning of July 15, 2022, a sense of normalcy on Wellington Avenue in Rochester, New York, was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Shaquan Parker, a 24-year-old Black male, was walking north on the sidewalk when a passing vehicle slowed, and multiple shots were fired in his direction. Struck at least once in the torso, Parker desperately sought refuge, running into a nearby backyard where he collapsed and died from his wounds.
At the time of the shooting, the motive was unclear, as Parker was not known to be involved in any disputes.
The Rochester Police Department's investigation into the homicide led them to a 35-year-old convicted felon named Marlon Williams. More than a year after Parker's death, in September 2023, the U.S. Marshals Violent Felony Fugitive Task Force located and arrested Williams. When he was taken into custody, he was found to be in possession of a loaded 9mm handgun. Subsequent forensic analysis by the Monroe County Crime Lab confirmed that this was the weapon used to end Shaquan Parker's life. Williams' criminal history, which included three prior felony convictions for robbery and assault, made his possession of a firearm illegal.
The legal proceedings against Marlon Williams moved forward, and he was indicted for second-degree murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree in connection with Parker's death. He also faced charges for an unrelated shooting incident that had occurred on Ripley Street in November 2022. In October 2024, a jury found Marlon Williams guilty of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. The conviction brought a measure of justice to Parker's family, though their loss remained immeasurable. In December 2024, Marlon Williams was sentenced for his crimes.
