In the summer of 1907, a sudden act of violence shattered the peace in the bayside town of Crisfield, Maryland, leading to the tragic death of a dedicated lawman. Night Chief John Henry 'Jack Hen' Daugherty, a 52-year-old officer with the Crisfield Police Department, was fatally shot in the back of the head while escorting a prisoner to jail. The incident unfolded after Daugherty and another officer had arrested a man on a warrant for the illegal sale of whiskey.
As the two officers
walked their prisoner down the street, a friend of the man they had just arrested emerged from the shadows. Having witnessed the arrest, the individual had armed himself with a. 44 caliber revolver. Without warning, he approached the officers from behind and fired a single shot, striking Night Chief Daugherty and killing him instantly. The suddenness of the attack left no time for a response, and a husband and father of five was lost in a moment of brutal violence.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene in an attempt to evade capture. His desperate escape led him to a sailboat, with which he intended to cross into Virginia. However, his bid for freedom was short-lived. A determined posse of local citizens quickly formed and pursued the fleeing suspect. They successfully intercepted him, bringing him back to Crisfield. In the aftermath of the officer's murder, the town's raw anger boiled over, and the suspect was beaten and lynched by the posse.
